In addition to the above mentioned, you have flash bombs and sonic bombs to distract the titans while you attack their limbs. But that's not all you can use while fighting. You need to keep your swords sharp for maximum damage, your gas tank full for boosting through the air, and health packs to keep you alive. When fighting titans on the battlefield, you are going to need all the items you can get. Always make sure you attack titans that threaten your primary objective first, that way you don't fail a mission! It doesn't matter how long you take to complete the mission, what matters is if you are thorough in completing every task and taking out every titan on the map.
If you fail even one side mission or forget about triggering them, you won't achieve an S-Rank at the end. The side missions are the green smoke signals that appear with character portraits, when you complete them, the character will join up with your squad for the rest of the mission. This sometimes requires you wiping out every titan on the map and dwindling down the total titan units. To guarentee an S-Rank, you not only need to kill a large number of titans on the map, but you also need to complete all of the side missions that appear as well.
The key to getting the most experience is to always get an S-Rank on every mission. Based on this ranking, you'll receive experience for your regiment and for the character you played with during the mission. At the end of every mission, you'll receive a rank based on how you fought against the titans.
